Animal Lovers Join Wildlife Internships and Volunteer Projects Abroad
International Volunteers and Interns through CrossContinental.org Share Their Experience on Animal Projects Around the Globe.
International internships and volunteer abroad programs offer a unique opportunity to combine cultural experience with education. Participants not only gain work experience and language skills, but also enhance their global network and cultural intelligence. International volunteers and interns have the option to choose from a variety of work projects abroad, but the choice is made easy for animal lovers. Recent participants through CrossContinental.org report their experience helping wildlife projects abroad. In the attached video (http://youtu.be/pYjkn2BBi30), participants showcase this unforgettable experience of a lifetime working with animals abroad.
Wildlife Internships in the Amazon Rainforest
Tori Pollins, a California native and student of Natural Resources Conservation at the University of British Columbia, was considering wildlife internships abroad and eventually applied for a 3-month internship in the Amazon rainforest. Tori chose to intern through CrossContinental due primarily to their versatility and affordability.
The typical duties at wildlife projects abroad include: feeding animals, caring for sick animals, repairing enclosures, constructing enclosures, fishing, and cleaning. Before the internship even started, Tori shared, “I am really excited about going to the Amazon with CrossContinental to work on a wildlife internship. I am really passionate about the environment and animals.”
Benefits of International Internships
Such international internships enable individuals to experience other cultures while gaining valuable work experience and learning a second language. Upon successful completion of the internship, Tori said, “It gave me the opportunity to travel, learn more Spanish, and work with animals; the three things I am most passionate about.”
The Support Network and Cultural Experience
Speaking of the support network through CrossContinental, Tori comments, “Both my host family and my local coordinators were great! My home-stay mom made me feel very welcome and was very accommodating of my needs during my stay. Patricia (the local coordinator) made herself readily available by phone and checked in with me a few times to see how I was getting along at the center.”
Recognizing the effort of CrossContinental and the unique cultural experience they offer through their programs, Tori said, “I always felt supported and that I had the proper guidance, both before my departure and during my time in Ecuador. The people CrossContinental connected me with gave me an amazing cultural experience that I can never forget.” She added, “CrossContinental helped me connect with my dream of working in wildlife rescue.”
Wildlife Volunteer Projects in Africa
The sentiments are shared by another CrossContinental participant, Anouk Jans, from the Netherlands. Anouk, at the age of 17, enrolled in agap year program to work with animals for 6 months in Africa. To get a taste of both urban and rural lifestyle, she spent 1 month at a city zoo and then 5 months at a monkey sanctuary in rural Africa. As a wildlife volunteer abroad, she cared for the needs of animals and also provided educational tours for visitors.
The personalized support offered by CrossContinental is essential to a successful volunteer abroad trip, as Anouk reports, “I want to thank Cross-Continental for the great experience I had in Ghana. It’s really something I will never forget.”
These stories are just a few of animal projects abroad involving wildlife rescue or animal care-giving. Many other projects are available at dog shelters, animal welfare centers, animal hospitals, zoos, and wildlife sanctuaries around the world. Whether one’s goal is to earn school credit or express their love for animals, there are projects somewhere in the world that fit the bill.
